The local bungalow
From the cluster of working-class models that ring the former Beacon Manufacturing site to the polished gems in Norwood Park, if you want bungalows, you'll find them in Asheville or the area just beyond.
Bungalows boomed in popularity nationwide from the early 1900s to the '40s and '50s. Never a status symbol, the bungalow's popularity lay in its affordability. Modest and conveniently laid out, they were homes that owners could maintain themselves. Bungalows - literally a home whose materials one could order complete from Sears or Montgomery Ward - offered the middle class a chance at the American dream.
"It was supposed to be affordable housing and in those days it really was," said Bill Wescott, an expert in historic preservation who lives and works in Asheville.
